An Ode to the Suit
Forever a power play
I don’t care what anyone says - I still love a suit. Even now, in the post-office world where remote work and athleisure reign - a suit is so unexpected. It’s bold and a little tongue in cheek. It’s both a throwback and an utterly modern statement.
I was just having this conversation with my colleagues over lunch a couple weeks ago. We were all in jeans, but we were discussing the understated elegance and power of a woman in a suit. When done well, this look joins masculine and feminine in perfect union. It takes something so quintessentially male and infuses it with a unique blend of female energy, transforming it into something new.
A suit reminds me of the time when there was a clear distinction between work clothes and weekend clothes. When getting dressed for work was a very particular kind of preparation. Now that I no longer live in NYC or work at a big law firm and nobody really dresses up for anything, it’s a rare occasion indeed to spot a suited up woman in the wild. Which makes it all the more fun to look for. There are so many different elements to play with - color, cut, texture, silhouette, adornments - I love to see what people choose. How they tell their story. A woman in a suit is saying something. And for me, part of the fun is to read the look and decode the message.
Everything has become so casual these days. When in doubt, people seem to dress down. But I would choose a suit over almost everything for any number of important events, including pretty much any celebration - a wedding, a graduation, a shower, a milestone birthday, an anniversary, a funeral … Any number of potentially high-stakes situations including an interview, a board meeting, a court date, a mediation, a negotiation, a TV appearance, meeting with a potential client, future business partner, or mentor, or really almost anything else where I wanted to project confidence, authority, and warmth. I feel like a suit is the answer to many questions.
I’ve been a longtime fan of Zara for their unique blend of chic simplicity and worldly bohemian. They do colors and textures far better than most other comparable retailers and they’ve always looked to iconic brands like Chanel and Gucci for inspiration when it comes to fabrics and details. So I’m not surprised that Zara is serving up an impressive array of suits that effortless strike the perfect balance of power and femininity. Have a look:
Walking into a room in any one of these suits immediately announces your presence and sets the tone - so you can sit back, observe, and let your clothes speak for you in the best way.
Til next time - wishing you beauty and abundance 💕
